Plan to use australian steel for defence vehicles shores up jobs
Australia has won the right to upgrade its entire defence budget, a government expert told The Conversation on Wednesday.
The Government's Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane, will today make a presentation to parliament on how defence spending will be managed in the coming years.
"We've achieved that outcome because the Government set up a new government-led and Government-appointed committee with the mission of ensuring defence has a strong presence in Australia's defence budget and our future growth strategy," said Macfarlane.
The plan: Australian steel for defence vehicles
It is now a year-end deadline to implement the report, and on November 17, the Government has released its analysis of the plan. It also published the analysis that outlines four key elements of the plan ” spending on national defence (including national security); reducing the need for defence procurement; reducing the need for ships; and improving national security.
The report also proposes that the Government maintain a defence presence and national defence force in Australia by 2019.
It states the Government will continue to work with Australian companies in international security programs and develop capabilities and skills necessary to counter the growing threat to Australia's national security and the prosperity of its own society from radical Islamic terrorism.
"We are committed to making our own decisions about our national security," said Macfarlane.
"The government is making this plan clear because it will save Australians over $2 billion a year and provides certainty for the economy at a time when uncertainty continues to loom over defence expenditure."
Macfarlane has confirmed a plan to upgrade the country's entire defence portfolio.
"Australia has the best capabilities in the world," he said. "Our forces are able to deploy as a deterrent against international threats at the moment ” our aircraft carriers, our nuclear forces they're very good at that. Australia also has the largest maritime sector of any country in the world.
"This plan to strengthen Australia's capability and position the country as a global player has got to do this work.
"That's something our government will take a very strong stand against."
Macfarlane also made clear that while the report's recommendations may not affect future governments, they will be delivered and implemented in the current parliamentary term.
However, defence is not the only area in which the Government has increased spending. It has also committed $7.2 billion in additional funds this financial year and will spend a further $8 billion next financial year to ensure the military budget remains sustainable.
Longford plan aims to keep regions rural character
The council is building on the success of its plans for development and expansion in other areas.
It is also building its own authority.
A "local authority" is a local body set up by a central government or by an authority in another state or territory.
These local authorities provide services, provide schools, police and health and other local services and have statutory powers for the area.
The areas included by the plan include the North-East, the East and North and West of Ireland.

The council is providing financial support for the authority which will include new transport infrastructure, a new fire station and services such as access control.
Belfast and South Tyrone are said to be the best candidates for the authority due to their good transport links, high economic prospects and favourable population density.
North-East Louth, south west Derry and the East Midlands also appear to have suitable opportunities to develop as local authorities.
The Belfast City Council is building a local authority to provide services, establish roads, manage council property, carry out community services and carry out other statutory functions under its authority.
The proposals for the authority were presented to the Derry City Council Council ahead of the regional planning meeting on 12 October.
Tough talk from SDLP
The council has been accused of "tough talk" by Sinn Fin in its statement on the planning proposals.
This statement accused SDLP Leader Peter Robinson of asking for more funding of transport infrastructure during the SDLP conference when she was in the minority government.
SDLP leader Willie Rennie said: "The council has proposed funding up to £700m for the Belfast City Council, including £300m for a second rail link which will link south Belfast to Derry, while funding around £400m for housing development in East Belfast.
"Both of these proposals are on the back foot by the SDLP's demand that a separate council would act as the administration for all of east Belfast which would mean the removal of services and services and, according to my understanding, the closure of all the existing services."
He added: "In fairness to Peter Robinson, the Belfast City Council was established in the context of the 1998 Belfast Agreement which created a new local authority which, after a two-year assessment period, was then announced to be the new authority."
